Research Coordinator: Violent Conflict in Indonesia Study
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Duration: 150 days short-term consultant (World Bank)
The World Bank’s Conflict and Development Program is currently carrying out a large-scale, three-year project to systematically study the incidence and impacts of violent conflict in Indonesia. The research strategy incorporates mixed quantitative and qualitative methods. The first phase of the project will consist of building a large dataset drawing on sub-provincial newspapers in 21 provinces for the years 1998-2008. During the second phase of the project, teams of researchers will conduct qualitative research to investigate the important patterns in conflict across Indonesia indicated by the dataset. The aim of this study is to further understanding of processes that contribute to variation in conflict/violence levels and outcomes.
The World Bank plans to hire an Indonesian national as a Research Coordinator for this project. The coordinator will have a range of responsibilities including: providing assistance to the lead researcher; supervising the quantitative portion of the study; developing method notes; and liaising with government and non-government agencies. It is desired that the coordinator will have a range of qualifications including: a postgraduate degree in a social science (preferably to Masters level); strong quantitative skills; fluent Indonesian and English language skills; knowledge of conflict and development issues in Indonesia; experience of working with local research organizations and government and non-government organizations.
